Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi is no more

Former Muhtamim (Director General) of Al-Jamiatul Tahlima Darul Uloom Moinul Islam Madrasa in Hathazari Upazila of Chittagong and Amir of Hefazat-e-Islam Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi have passed away. (Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun). He was about 100 years old at the time of his death.

The physical condition of Amir Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi of Hifazat-e-Islam started deteriorating around 4:30 pm on Friday, September 18. Allama Shafi, who was in the ICU of Chittagong Medical College Hospital, was airlifted to Azgar Ali Hospital in Gandaria, Old Dhaka. He breathed his last at 6:30 pm while undergoing treatment there.

The 105-year-old scholar was suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure and other geriatric diseases. That's why he often had to be hospitalized. In the last few months, Allama Shafi had to undergo treatment in Chittagong and Dhaka hospitals for several days.

Ahmed Shafi came to the discussion in 2011. She called for a program in Chittagong to oppose the women's development policy that year. However, the scholars of Dhaka were more effective in protests and demonstrations in that movement. Later, in 2013, scholars and students of Qawmi Madrasa staged a nationwide protest against blogger Rajiv Haider's Thaba Baba blogging. However, in the absence of senior scholars in Dhaka, Ahmad Shafi came to lead the Alem Samaj of the whole country.

Allama Ahmad Shafi, popular all over the country, was born in 1920 in Pakhiatila village of Rangunia police station in Chittagong. This top leader of Hefazat was admitted to Hathazari Madrasa at the age of 10. In 1941, he was admitted to the Darul Uloom Deoband Madrasa in India and studied Hadith, Tafsir and Fiqh for four years. In 1947, Darul Uloom was appointed as a teacher in Hathazari. In 1986, as per the decision of the council, he became the director general. Later he also performed the duties of Shaykhul Hadith. In 2008, he was elected chairman of the Qawmi Madrasa Board of Education-Befaq. Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh was formed on 19 January 2010 at the Ulema Conference held at Darul Uloom Hathazari Auditorium. He was nominated as its founder Amir.

On April 11, 2016, under the leadership of Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina declared the certificate of Hadith at the doorstep of Qawmi Madrasa as equivalent to MA Arabic-Islamic Studies. He is survived by his wife, two sons, two daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
