Innovation of 6 new varieties of Aman

Staff Correspondent
In a long 12-year effort, a farmer named Aruni Sarkar has innovated six new climate tolerant varieties of Aman paddy.

The farmer from Gangarampur village of Khulna's Batiaghata Upazila had a dream to develop a new variety of Aman paddy, which would increase the yield in the south-western lands. His dream has come true. This new variety of paddy is being cultivated locally.

Newly developed six types of Aman paddy have been named "Alo Dhan", "Locos Dhan", "Aruni Dhan", "Ganga Dhan", "Maitri Dhan", and "Lakshmibhog Dhan".

Aruni Sarkar claims that his varieties would change the fate of poverty-hit farmers in the southern coastal regions where saline water intrudes.

The varieties have been made through the hybridization of multiple traditional varieties of paddy.
