A fire at a 13-story building in the southern Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung has killed at least 46 people.

The death toll from the blaze, which started around 3 pm on Wednesday, is expected to rise.

This information has been reported by The New York Times.

The local fire service said in a statement that the building's fire was "extremely terrible." Several floors were almost destroyed.

The death toll could exceed, said Li Ching-Seong, head of Taiwan's fire service.
