At least 10 people have been killed and 46 others are missing after a boat carrying migrants sank off the coast of Malaysia. Besides, 4 people have been rescued alive in this incident.

The boat sank off the coast of Tanjung Balau in Kota Tingir in the country's Johor Bahru province on Wednesday, December 15th local time.

However, the cause of the incident was not immediately known.

According to the Johor Bahru State Fire and Rescue Department, the boat carrying 60 people sank about 20 meters off the coast at 8 am local time on Wednesday before it sank. The bodies of four women and six men floated ashore. Two more men and two women were rescued in the incident. Another 46 people aboard are still missing. A search and rescue operation is underway to find them, he said.

First Admiral Nurul Hizam Zakaria, director of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), said the victims were believed to have entered Malaysian waters illegally before the boat sank due to bad weather. The Fire and Rescue Department continues to search for and rescue the missing migrants.
