At least 17 people have been killed in a collision between a bus and a truck in Jharkhand's Pakur district. Another 26 people were injured in the accident.

On Wednesday, a truck carrying a gas cylinder collided with a passenger bus.

The accident took place on the Govindpur-Sahibganj highway in the state. The passenger bus was going from Barharwa in Sahibganj to the Jasidih area of ​​the Deoghar district. There were about 40 passengers on the bus at the time of the accident.

Several people trapped in the bus have been rescued after the accident. Police say the crash may have been caused by thick fog.

A police official said the death toll could rise further. The deputy commissioner has announced one lakh rupees assistance to the families of those killed in the accident.

A local official told that 17 deaths had been confirmed so far. Another 26 people were injured in the accident. Three of them are in critical condition.

In a tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Rs 2 lakh for the families of the dead and Rs 50,000 for the families of the injured.

He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. At the same time, he wished the injured a speedy recovery. President Ram Nath Kovind also expressed deep grief over the incident.
