Bus-trolley collision at Bangabandhu Bridge, 2 killed

Two people were killed when a bus and a trolley collided on the Bangabandhu Bridge in Sirajganj. Seven passengers behind the trolley were seriously injured. At one stage, when the trolley involved in the accident caught fire, the traffic in the north Bengal lane of the bridge was stopped for a long time. This caused traffic jam from the western roundabout of the bridge to Kadda.

The accident took place in the North Bengal-bound lane near Pillar No. 18 of Bangabandhu Bridge around 4:30 am on Sunday.

The deceased have been identified as Nazrul Islam, 35, of Gayabari area in Dimla upazila of Nilphamari and Majnu, 33, of the same area.

Ariful Islam, sub-inspector of Bangabandhu Bridge West Police Station, said a bus carrying Shyamoli Paribahan hit a trolley carrying soil from behind in the northbound lane near Pillar No. 18 in the Sirajganj section of Bangabandhu Bridge at around 4:30 am. The trolley caught fire. Seven passengers in the back of the trolley were seriously injured. Police and fire service members arrived at the scene, rescued the injured and brought the trolley fire under control. When the injured were sent to Sirajganj Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital, the on-duty doctor declared Majnu and Nazrul Islam dead.

Meanwhile, as a result of the accident, the traffic on Bangabandhu Bridge was closed and severe traffic jam was created for five kilometers from the western roundabout of the bridge to Kadda. The passengers suffered. Police are working to reduce traffic congestion.
