6.1 magnitude earthquake shakes Japan

A strong earthquake has shaken Japan. The magnitude of the earthquake is 6.1 on the Richter scale. At 11:05 a.m. local time on Thursday, December 9, the quake hit Tokara Island in the Kagoshima region.

However, no casualties have been reported from the quake. No tsunami alert was issued. The epicenter was reported at 14 km depth, according to the Geological Survey of Japan.

City officials said 64 residents and 12 workers had been evacuated.

Earlier on Saturday, another earthquake shook the region. A strong earthquake in March 2011 killed more than 15,000 people in Japan.
