The epicenter was reported below the epicenter, according to the US Geological Survey. The quake, which struck at 9:48 pm local time on Friday, had a magnitude of 6.1.

The quake struck near the city of Dali. It is a popular tourist area. Lots of people come there every year. The US Geological Survey said the quake was followed by at least two aftershocks.

At least two people have been killed in the mountains, local officials said. At least 27 people were injured in the quake, Xinhua news agency reported.

Hours after the first quake, another magnitude 7.3 earthquake shook Qinghai province, 1,200 kilometers from the epicenter.

The epicenter was reported below the Pacific Ocean floor, however; no tsunami alert was issued. Officials believe a few houses may have been damaged. The report said emergency department officials and several disaster management teams had been dispatched to the two quake-hit areas.
