Morzina Begum the ‘Successful Entrepreneur’

Staff Correspondent
It all started with five small kanthas, with which she got some income. From this she was inspired to make nakshi kantha. Then she did not have to look back. Morzina Begum of Bamaner Hat village in Tabakpur union of Ulipur upazila of Kurigram has aroused a lot of response by making that nakshi kantha of rural poet Jasim Uddin. She has not only succeeded in this but has also provided employment opportunities to about 360 women members of various impoverished families in the area.

It is learned that three years ago, Morzina Begum used to invite some women from the village to her house and teach them how to sew kantha. Then she would sit at home with them and sew nakshi kantha. She used to sell the kantha in different places and distribute it among all the people. At first no one wanted to come, but later different women from the area used to come to her for work. After that she formed an organization called 'Tabakpur Mahila Unnayan Samiti' with the help of helpless women. With these women, Nakshi has been making kantha, pillow and pillow covers, flowers in shawls and sarees, jewelery with jute, cloth jewelery, papas, and various other eye-catching items.

One woman worker earns TK. 2,000 to TK. 8,000 per month in the factory. This has created opportunities for them to support their families as well as educate their children. They demanded that if financial institutions stood by entrepreneurs like Morzina Begum, small scale industries would flourish in the district level and create employment. Can also play a role in the national economy.

Received an order in 2019 in collaboration with Asia Foundation with Bengal Craft. After working there for a year, the order was closed due to Corona. Then in 2020, a new agreement was signed with Friendship Bangladesh Nadi Limited. Now she is working with them in the long run. Nakshi kantha made by her is available in big showrooms of Dhaka including participating in various fairs with eye-catching items including shawls.

Visiting Morzina Begum's factory on Monday, it was seen that women workers were busy with their own work. And the entrepreneur of the organization Morzina Begum is supervising these works.

At that time I was talking to Lucky, Iti and Rumi working in the factory. They make nakshi kantha as well as study. They said that they get a wage of 500 taka for making one nakshi kantha. They earn 2,500 to 3,000 taka a month by making 5-6 kanthas. With which you can support the family as well as the cost of education.

Entrepreneur Morzina Begum said, "My business will expand if the government and non-government organizations cooperate with me."

The indomitable woman entrepreneur said that she wants to create employment for the helpless poor women of the area with the help of BSCIC and other financial institutions.

Jahangir Alam, Deputy Manager, Kurigram BSCIC Industrial City, said, "We have given entrepreneurial training to Morzina Begum and she has been given a loan of Tk. 1 lakh at the initial stage. It is also helping to market its products online."
