Floods in China: Death toll rises to 33

Four days after the onset of heavy rains in China's Henan province, there are no signs of abating. The death toll from the floods caused by heavy rains has risen to 33. The death toll is expected to rise.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has recorded 668 mm of rainfall till Friday, July 23.

Rescuers have confirmed the deaths of 12 people, including children, trapped in the subway. More than 1 lakh 75 thousand people have been evacuated to safe shelters. One more week is needed to understand the clear picture of the damage.

According to preliminary estimates by the Henan authorities, 84 million worth of property was destroyed by heavy rains and floods. At an emergency cabinet meeting on Thursday, July 22, Prime Minister Li Keqiang announced the new disaster response fund. Meanwhile, banks and insurance companies have announced revised loan repayment policies for residents of the affected areas.
