A fuel tanker exploded near the Sierra Leone capital, Freetown, on Friday, killing at least 91 people.

The news agency Reuters quoted the central morgue and local authorities as saying on Saturday.

The government has not yet confirmed the death toll. But Freetown's Central State morgue manager said they had found 91 bodies after the blast.

The mayor of the port city, Evan Aki-Savar, said in a post on Facebook that "people who had gathered to collect fuel from the wrecked car were also among the victims."

Brima Bureh, head of the National Disaster Management Agency, said in a video shared online in Sesse, "We have found many casualties and burnt bodies. It's a terrible, terrible accident."
