Gaza crisis: UN calls for ceasefire

Gaza crisis
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on Hamas and Israel to call for a ceasefire in honor of the Muslim community's religious holiday of Eid al-Fitr.

"Respecting the spirit of Eid, I call for an immediate end to the violence in Gaza and Israel," Guterres wrote in a Twitter post on Friday, May 14.

He further wrote,"Many innocent civilians have already died. This conflict will only increase extremism in the whole region."

It is to be noted that Eid is celebrated in Palestine on Thursday like other countries in the Middle East. But Israeli forces did not stop the attack on this day of the festival. Another 19 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza that day.

At least 109 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli airstrikes since Monday. Among the dead were 28 children and 11 women. Another 580 people were injured. Gaza's health ministry said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the second emergency meeting of the UN Security Council convened on Friday to resolve the conflict between Israel and Palestine has stalled due to US disagreement. Earlier, the United States called off a meeting of the Security Council on Wednesday to discuss the issue.

The Security Council requested that in addition to the International Atomic Energy Agency's ongoing inspections in Iran, that it monitor Iran's compliance with "the steps required by the IAEA Board".
