6 products of Bangladesh got recognition as Geographical Indicator

9 products of Bangladesh including 6 new ones have been recognized as Geographical Indicator (GI).The six new products recognized are Dhakai Muslin, Rajshahi Silk, Shataranji in Rangpur, White Soil in Vijaypur in Netrokona, Kataribhog in Dinajpur and Bangladeshi Kalijira. The three previously recognized are Hilsa, Jamdani and Kshirshapati Mango from Chapainawabganj.

Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun handed over the GI certificates to the concerned persons at the Officers Club in the capital on Thursday. A total of nine products were recognized as GI.

If the soil, water, weather and altitude of a particular land of a country and the culture of its people play the most important role in the production of a product, then it is recognized as the GI product of that country. These 9 products were recognized all over the world as Bangladesh's own products. The GI certificate was handed over to the concerned persons at a seminar on 'Intellectual Property for Realizing the Dream of the Father of the Nation' organized by the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) under the Ministry of Industry.

When asked, DPDT Registrar (Additional Secretary) Abdus Sattar told Prothom Alo that from now on these 9 products are Bangladesh's own products. No other country can claim the names of these products. Abdus Sattar said, nine products are brands for Bangladesh in the world market. GI recognition will increase the demand for these products in the world market. Exports will also increase. At the same time the price of these products will increase up to 30 percent. Fazli Mango and Bagda Shrimp are awaiting recognition as GI products, he said.

Shah Alam, Chairman, Bangladesh Weaving Board for Dhaka Muslin, Mushtaq Hasan, Chairman, Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSIC) for Shataranji, Rangpur, Abdul Hakim, Director General, Bangladesh Silk Development Board for Rajshahi Silk, Netrokona Deputy Commissioner Kazi for Vijaypur The certificate was handed over to Shahjahan Kabir, Director General, Bangladesh Rice Research Institution (BRRI) for Kataribhog and Bangladeshi Kalijira in Dinajpur.

State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder was present on the occasion among others. Industries Secretary Zakia Sultana presided over the function. At today's event, the patent was awarded to Vijay Digital's proprietor and Minister of Posts and Telecommunications Mostafa Jabbar and Hishab Limited.
Trademarks include Pran-RFL Group, Mohana Television, Access to Information (A2I) Program, Walton Hitech Industries, Square Pharmaceuticals, Golden Trade International BD and Incepta Pharmaceuticals Limited. Besides, BD Food Limited, Jihan Plastic Industries and Aman Plastic Industries were recognized for the design.
