At least 15 people have been killed in a devastating landslide at a gold mine in northeastern Guinea. Authorities continue to try to remove the wreckage to rescue the survivors.

Sekau Binou Simagan, a local councilor, said the mine collapsed near the village of Tatakurau in the Siguiri region last Saturday. The miners died instantly.

It is learned that 15 bodies have been recovered till Saturday night. They are all male and between the ages of 14 to 40. All the victims have been buried in a mass grave following proper religious rites.

Mining accidents often occur in the West African country, especially in the Siguri area bordering Mali. As per the government, more than 20,000 miners are working in the area.

Earlier in Guinea, 17 workers were killed in a mine accident in 2019. A few months later, a dozen more lost their lives.

Guinea is rich in diamonds, gold, and bauxite. Although according to the United Nations, one out of every two people in Guinea lives below the poverty line.
