Police in Haiti has charged a notorious gang with abducting 17 Christian missionaries from a US-based organization. In Haiti, they say, the gang is known for kidnappings and murders.

Al Jazeera reports that Haiti's police inspector, Frantz Champagne, told the Associated Press on Sunday that they had been abducted by "400 Maoist gangs" from Ganthia, east of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince.

Authorities say members of the Maoist gang control the Cruix-des-Bouquets area, which includes Ganthia. There they kidnap, steal cars, and extort money from traders.

CNN reports that 16 missionaries from the United States and Canada were abducted on Saturday, according to the Christian Aid Ministry.

The Ohio-based agency said 16 of the abductees were Americans and one was a Canadian. Among them 5 are men, 7 are women and 5 are children.

A Haitian security source said the incident was being investigated.

"Haitian officials are working with the US State Department on this," Foreign Minister Claude Joseph told CNN.
