Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presented Independence Award 2022 to 9 eminent persons and 2 organizations.

She handed over the medal in a ceremony on Wednesday morning.

Earlier, a list of the winners was announced in a press release issued by the Cabinet on March 15. On that day, the names of 10 individuals and one organization were announced for the Independence Award. Many people were surprised to see the name of the unknown Amir Hamza in the literature department.

Amid criticism, the government dropped Amir Hamza's name from the list of the country's highest civilian honor, the Independence Award. Later in the Mujib Year, the name of the power department was nominated for the Independence Award for the successful completion of 100% electrification work.

This award is given in recognition of glorious and meritorious contributions at the national level.

This time the medals for independence and liberation war were awarded to 8 heroic freedom fighters Ilias Ahmed Chowdhury, martyred Colonel Khandaker Nazmul Huda (Bir Bikram), Abdul Jalil, Siraj Uddin Ahmed, late Mohammad Sahiuddin Biswas, and late Sirajul Haque.

Professor of Medicine Kanak Kanti Barua and Professor Kamrul Islam have received the Independence Award this time. The late architect Syed Mainul Hossain in architecture. This time, Bangladesh Wheat and Maize Research Institute (BWMRI) and the Department of Power received the award.

The Independence Award is the highest state civilian award in the country. The government has been giving this award every year since 1977 on the eve of Independence Day.
