Lightning strike in Joypurhat, killed 2

Two people were killed in a lightning strike at Panchbibi in Joypurhat. Four others were injured in the incident. The incident took place at Shaluwar field in Ratanpur village of the upazila around 8:15 am on Monday. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Panchbibi Police Station Palash Chandra Dev confirmed the matter.

The deceased were identified as Delwar Hossain, 55, of Jorpukuria village under Ratanpur upazila and Mofazzal Hossain, 53, of Ratanpur Chowdhurypara. The injured were identified as Emdadul Hossain, 27, Sabbir Hossain, 16, Khalil Mia, 55, and Sirajul Islam, 22. They are all known to be farmers by profession.

According to eyewitnesses and police sources, some farmers were planting paddy saplings in a crop field this morning. When it started raining at this time, they took shelter in the verandah of a house to guard the fish in a nearby pond. There were casualties due to lightning.

Locals later rushed to the spot and rescued two dead and four injured. The locals immediately brought the injured to Joypurhat Modern District Hospital. Eyewitness farmer Mamunur Rashid said the injured survived as they were a short distance away.

Panchbibi Police Station OC Palash Chandra Dev told that lightning struck while planting paddy saplings in the field this morning. Two people died on the spot due to lightning. Four injured people are being treated at Joypurhat Modern District Hospital.
