At least 36 people have been killed in a landslide in Maharashtra, India, after days of heavy rain. The incident took place in Raigad district of Maharashtra, NDTV reported.

Helicopter rescue operations are being carried out in the flood-hit area. Two naval teams, 12 local rescue teams, two coastguard team and three national disaster management team are conducting rescue operations in the flood-hit areas.

Rescuers are urging residents to climb to the roof or to higher ground to make it easier for them to be rescued by helicopter.

Landslides occurred at 3 places yesterday due to heavy rains. Rescue team members recovered 32 bodies from the same place. The bodies of the remaining 4 people were found at another place.

Meanwhile, a red alert was issued in several districts of the state, including Mumbai, India's commercial city, as heavy rains continued for several days.

Many areas have been submerged due to the continuous heavy rains, various structures including houses have been destroyed. Thousands of people have been placed under house arrest.

A building collapsed due to rain, killing 33 people, including children, in Mumbai on Sunday.
