Lay-off in garment
Workers have blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in protest of the lay-off announcement at two garment factories in the Gazipur metropolitan Basan Road and Bhogra areas. They blocked the road from the morning.

The workers complained that everyone returned home after finishing work till Saturday night. When the workers came in front of the factory around 8 am on Sunday, they saw a legal notice of lay-off at the gate. As a result, thousands of factory workers became agitated and upset.

Workers say authorities have declared the factory lay-off without informing them. Today, Sunday, they were supposed to pay the salary of last September.

Meanwhile, workers of another factory owned by the same owner in Bhogra area also protested and blocked the road after seeing a notice announcing the lay-off of the factory at their factory gate.

Meanwhile, the blockade of the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway disrupted all traffic in the northern part of the country.

Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Zakir Hossain said efforts were being made to resolve the issue by talking to factory authorities and workers.

In this regard, no statement was received from the factory authorities.

The factory authorities mentioned in their lay-off notice that their factory had been severely damaged by the Corona pandemic and that they could not afford to run the factory. Therefore, the factory lay-off has been declared as per the law.
