Meteorological Department issues 'special warning' for cyclone 'Yaas'

Cyclone Yaas is coming towards Bangladesh. The cyclone is likely to hit the Khulna coast of Orissa-West Bengal-Bangladesh by next Wednesday, May 26. However, at present, the apparent light pressure in the East-Central Bay of Bengal has turned into a low pressure, according to the Meteorological Department.

This information has been given in a special weather notification on Sunday, May 23 at noon.

The notice said that the apparent light pressure in the East-Central Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas has condensed and turned into low pressure in the same area. It was located 700 km south-southwest of Chittagong seaport, 615 km south-southwest of Cox's Bazar seaport, 710 km south of Mongla seaport and 655 km south of Payra seaport at 12 noon on Sunday, May 23.

The meteorological office also said that it could intensify further into a deep depression and later turn into a cyclone and move north-west.

Within 44 km of the depression center, the maximum sustained wind speed is 40 km per hour, increasing to 50 km in the form of gusts or gusts of wind, the statement said. The sea is rough near the center of depression.

Besides, Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports have been asked to display remote warning signal number 1. All fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay and the deep sea have been asked to move to safer shelters until further notice. At the same time, they have been told not to wander in the deep sea.

Earlier, the Meteorological Department said that the intense heat will start decreasing from Monday, May 24. Normal temperatures will prevail on Tuesday, May 25. It is expected to hit northern Orissa, West Bengal and southern Bangladesh by Wednesday, May 26 afternoon.

Cyclone Yaas is yet to have a super cyclone. There can be severe to severe cyclones. Khulna and Sundarbans areas are at high risk.
