At least 54 people have been killed and 58 injured in a collision between a trailer and a truck in southern Mexico. The accident happened on Thursday, December 9 at local time.

It is learned that most of the casualties in the accident are immigrants.

At least 58 people were injured in the crash, according to the Mexican state of Chiapas. The injured have been admitted to the hospital. The condition of three of them is critical.

Among the casualties are also women and children.

A local fire service official told that most of the migrants in the trailer were from Honduras.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said the dead included foreigners also. In a Twitter message, he expressed his condolences to the relatives of the victims.

He added that the foreign ministries of the countries were being contacted to provide details of the foreign nationals who were among the casualties in the accident.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador described the crash as "extremely painful" and offered his condolences to the families of the victims.
