539 migrants including Bangladeshis rescued from boat off Italian coast

International Desk
A total of 539 migrants, including Bangladeshis, have been rescued from a dilapidated fishing boat off the coast of the southern Italian island of Lampedusa.

Alida Serachieri, a nurse at Doctors Without Borders, an international charity for doctors, said three people and a few children were among those trapped in the boat.

Immigrants include people from North and West Africa. However, it is not known how many Bangladeshis are with them. Among those rescued were some prisoners in Libya, according to local Italian media.

At the risk of their lives, the migrants sailed from the Libyan coast to Europe, crossing about 300 kilometers by sea to reach the Italian coast of Lampedusa. The Italian Coast Guard rescued them.

Of the more than 500 people rescued, at least 20 showed signs of torture, said nurse Alida Serachieri. They have been physically examined.

Serachieri said they have burns and firearms on their bodies. Some have become extremely weak due to dehydration.
