15 dead in Myanmar pagoda drowning

International Desk
At least 15 people have drowned while attending prayers at a Buddhist temple in a remote area of Myanmar. The accident happened on Sunday in the southern state of Mon, local rescuers said.

The accident took place three kilometers off the coast of Thanbujayat town in Mon state. Thousands of pilgrims drowned as they tried to cross the rocky coast to reach the Kyeik Hne Pagoda.

Local officials said many people tried to cross the road without understanding the inaccessible target of the four-meter-wide road. There was a strong tide at that time. As a result, several people drowned.

"We usually allow people to come to the temple around 8:30 am," said Nai Sahai Yan, a local official. But they did not listen to us and tried to walk away. Many people drowned due to the intense pressure created in that crowded waterway.

The body of 15 people has been taken to hospital and three more are still missing, said Ko Qiao Thu, an emergency rescue officer at Thanbyuzayat. The hazardous section of the waterway was not well identified, local officials told AFP.
