Nigeria's army chief Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru has been killed in a plane crash in the northwestern state of Kaduna.

A BBC report, citing the country's military, said on Saturday 22 May that the plane had landed in hostile weather. Another 10 crew members, including the plane's crew, were killed in the crash.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has said he is "deeply saddened" by the accident.

General Attahiru, 55, took over as army chief last January.

The Nigerian Air Force said the crash happened while the plane was landing at Kaduna International Airport.

The crash comes three months after seven people were killed in a Nigerian military plane crash on a runway in the capital, Abuja.
