5 Killed in Nor'westers-Lightning Strike

Five people have been killed in two Upazilas of Sunamganj due to Nor'westers storm and lightning. A mother, daughter and son of a family died tragically by Nor'westers in Jagannathpur Upazila around 4:30 am on Thursday, April 14 and a father and son in Shalla Upazila at around 6:30 am.

According to police and local sources, Harun Mia was a caretaker at the house of Bulu Mia, a London expatriate from Solemanpur, Ward 5, Patli Union, Jagannathpur. He lived in a tin-shed house. When Nor'westers started this morning, a velvet apple tree and mango tree fell on his house.

At that time, his wife Mausuma Begum (35), daughter Mahima Akhter (4) and son Md. Hossain (1) was seriously injured. After rescuing them, they were taken to Jagannathpur Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared the three dead.

The husband of the dead woman said. Harun Mia's cousin Netrokona district representative of the daily Bhorer Kagoj. Shafiqul Islam told that his cousin went to the mosque to offer prayers at the time of the incident. Later Nor'westers storm started. When the storm came, he saw the incident.

On the other hand, Maqbool Khan (45) and his son Masud Khan (12), residents of Shalla village in Shalla Sadar Union of Shalla Upazila, went to fetch hay for cows from the haor near their house. At this time they were severely injured by lightning.

Later, the locals rescued them from the Haor and took them to the nearby Ajmeriganj Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared them dead.

Shalla police OC said. Aminul Islam said that the inquest of the bodies of father and son is going on. They will be handed over to their families later.
