9 killed in Bulgarian nursing home fire

A fire at a nursing home in eastern Bulgaria has killed at least nine people. The incident took place on Monday, November 22 local time. A top Interior Ministry official confirmed the information.

The accident took place at around 6 pm local time in an old school building in a village called Rayak which was converted into a nursing home. The incident happened just as dozens of people were preparing for dinner. Upon receiving the news, the fire service personnel rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control.

Fire service inspector Tihomir Totev told reporters that 58 people were living in the nursing home. It is unfortunate that nine of them have died.

He added that a smoky atmosphere was created around the building after the fire broke out.

At this time many people started having difficulty breathing. They were rescued and admitted to the hospital. Others have been evacuated from the scene.

The Interior Ministry said the fire spread from the roof of the building. Later it was brought under control. However, the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Officials say the incident is being investigated.
