The silent killer ‘Obesity’

Obesity is a physical condition that acts as a catalyst for the accumulation of excess fat in the body. It shortens the life span of people.

Obesity has now become a threat to public health in developed countries. More than 500 million young people around the world are now affected by this problem. This number is not very low in Bangladesh. A large number of children and youth, especially from well-to-do families, are already obese.

Are you obese? If you want to know this - you have to divide the weight in kg by the square of the height in meters. If the result is 30 or more, then you are obese. Obesity is usually classified based on these results. If the result is between 25 and 30, you are overweight, but not obese. Normal weight between 18.5 and 25. If it is below 18, it is considered as thin.

What causes obesity? The causes of obesity have been identified as overeating, low physical activity, hormonal, hereditary, mental problems, and taking certain medications.

However, whatever the reason, if you consume more calories than you need or if you consume fewer calories for any reason, the excess calories accumulate in the body, which is the main cause of obesity. In many cases, the affected person does not want to admit to overeating or does not realize that they are overeating.

In most cases, the people of society are affected by this problem. So it is also identified as a social disease.

Obese people are at risk of various diseases including high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, osteoarthritis, gallstones, various types of cancer, shortness of breath, sleep disturbances, various skin diseases, etc. Obesity also reduces the lifespan of people.
