Opposition leader arrested in Venezuela for treason

Venezuelan opposition leader Freddy Guevara has been arrested. Detective police arrested him on Monday. Freddy Guevara will be charged with terrorism and treason.

Attorney General Tarek Saab said in a statement that Guevara, a close associate of opposition leader Juan Guaidó, had been detained by members of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service. He has been detained for colluding with extremist and paramilitary groups affiliated with the Colombian government.

In tandem with the United States, these groups have been sharply criticize of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Tarek Saab said Freddy Guevara would be charged with terrorism, attacks on constitutional principles and conspiracy to commit crimes and treason.

Guevara won parliamentary elections in 2015, led by Guido. At that time the control of the parliament was in the hands of the opposition. Guevara was then charged with inciting violence during protests against Maduro's ouster in April and July 2017. The violence killed 125 people.
