Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday inaugurated the first reactor pressure vessel of the nuclear power plant under construction at Rooppur in Pabna, Bangladesh.

Once completed, the Rooppur center is expected to generate 2,400 MW of electricity in two units.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said, "Our goal is to take Bangladesh forward. In other words, we are now a part of nuclear power and we have made Bangladesh a place today."

"And that's for peace, that's the reality, that's very important. We're using nuclear energy for our peace. That means electricity will be generated, that electricity will go to the people at the Remote areas. People will have socio-economic development," she said.

The installation of this reactor is considered to be the most important step in the process of commissioning a nuclear power plant. Nuclear scientists refer to the reactor pressure vessel as the 'heart' of a nuclear power plant.
