"If it is an existential danger for Russia, the atomic arms stockpile can be utilized as per our idea," said Kremlin representative Dmitry Peskov

Russia's security policy dictates that the nation would possibly utilize nuclear weapons if its very presence were compromised, Kremlin representative Dmitry Peskov told in an interview on Tuesday.

The remark, almost a month after Russia sent its forces into Ukraine, came amid Western concern that the conflict there could escalate into an atomic conflict.

Peskov offered the remark in an English-language interview when found out if he was certain President Vladimir Putin would not utilize atomic weapons.

"We have a concept of domestic security and it's public, you can pursue all the purposes for nuclear arms to be used.

So if it is an existential threat for our country, then it (the nuclear arsenal) can be utilized as per our idea," he said.

"There could be no real explanations that were referenced in that text," he said in a further reference to the country's security concept.

Putin in February ordered Russia's nuclear forces to be placed on guard. In line with the order, Russia's defense ministry said on February 28 that its nuclear missile forces and Northern and Pacific armadas had been put on upgraded battle obligations, the Interfax news agency reported.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on March 14: "The possibility of atomic struggle, once inconceivable, is now back within the realm of possibility.
