'We are giving priority to the grassroots in economic policy'

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said, "I will eat by myself although i am in power. Power is not something we enjoy. That's the decent thing to do."

She said, "To bring the smile on the face of a person, that is the great achievement of my life. That's the biggest thing of my political career."

The Prime Minister said this while handing over houses including land ownership to 53,340 landless and homeless families across the country through video conference from Ganabhaban on Sunday, June 20.

Shelter project officials from the Prime Minister's Office, Sadar in Kurigram, Jhenaigati in Sherpur, Rangunia in Chattogram and Srimangal Upazila administration and beneficiaries in Moulvibazar were directly present on the occasion. Besides, 459 more upazilas of the country were added virtually.

In her inaugural address, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, "We have so far built houses for 442,608 families. Notable among these are Khurushkul Special Shelter Project and Shelter-2 Project in Cox's Bazar for Climate Refugee Rehabilitation. Our secretaries have also housed 160 families with their own funds. Various forces and organizations including the police have come forward in this work.

The Prime Minister said, "We have set a goal - to make Bangladesh poverty free. For this, we have given importance to education, brought health services to the doorsteps of the people through community clinics, ensured health protection of mother and child, ensured food security. I am giving flats for the slum dwellers to rent in Dhaka."

The Prime Minister said, "We are giving priority to the grassroots in economic policy. Reaching out to the people at the village level, ensuring their food, education and shelter and ensuring the livelihood of the grassroots people."
