Although passenger cars and passenger transport on the ferry have been declared closed, it is not being complied with. The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) has said that no vehicles or passengers other than emergency cargo vehicles and ambulances will be taken on the ferry from Friday as part of the government's overall restrictions.

Despite police checkposts, ghat authorities' instructions and strict restrictions, passenger vehicles and ferry crossings on the Shimulia-Banglabazar route are not stopping. Hundreds of passengers and passenger vehicles were seen crossing the Padma on the ferry through Shimulia Ghat in Munshiganj from Saturday morning. The health rules are being neglected in the ferry.

According to the ghat authorities, passengers from different places, including Dhaka, are arriving at the ghat in disarray due to the upcoming Eid and the extension of all restrictions. Then they are crossing the river by ferry ignoring the instructions.

BIWTC Shimulia Ghat Manager (Commerce) Faisal Ahmed said there are currently 10 ferries operating on the Shimulia-Banglabazar route. Passenger vehicles and passenger crossings have been banned. However, passengers are coming to the pier ignoring the police checkposts on the road from Dhaka. They are not going to stop getting on the ferry. So now that the passengers are coming to the pier, they are being encouraged to follow the hygiene rules.

On the other hand, hundreds of goods vehicles were seen waiting for the crossing at the wharf this morning.

A statement from BIWTC on Friday, July 9 said all types of vehicles and passenger transport on the ferry would be closed from July 9. There are instructions only for emergency goods vehicles and ambulance crossings in compliance with strict hygiene rules.
