A gunman has shot dead eight people in the U.S. state of California. The incident took place at a railway yard in San Jose, Santa Clara County, around 6:45 a.m. local time on Wednesday.

When the police went to the spot, gunmen were going on shooting. This has been reported in a report of the BBC.

Authorities say railway workers were among those killed. The attacker was their colleague.

Meanwhile, the attacker's house caught fire before the attack. It is believed the gunman set fire to his home before the attack. The attacker was identified as Samuel Cassidy, 57, law enforcement officials said.

Erica Ray, a spokeswoman for the San Jose Security Forces, said the attack was being investigated.

Meanwhile, the BBC quoted the Gun Violence Archive as saying that there have been 230 mass gun attacks in the United States this year.
