Strong tornadoes hit the Midwest and Southwest of the United States. At least 100 people have been killed in a tornado in the state of Kentucky, officials say.

Homes and businesses have been destroyed by the tornado over an area of 200 miles.

Rescuers are trying to rescue survivors from the rubble. The tornado hit the state of Kentucky at a speed of 365 kmph last Friday night, local time.

Meteorologists say such strong tornadoes are unusual in the winter. The tornado and fire destroyed a candle factory and several police stations in Kentucky.

A nursing home in the neighboring state of Missouri has collapsed. Six workers have been killed after an Amazon warehouse collapsed in Illinois.

This year's tornado is described as the deadliest in Kentucky's history, Governor Andy Beshear said. He said 40 people had been rescued alive from a candle factory in the town of Mayfield.

There were about 110 workers inside the factory at the time of the incident.

"I've never seen such a catastrophe in my life," the Kentucky governor told a news conference. I can't express this trouble in words. Here, in Kentucky, more than 100 people are probably dead."

More than 189 members of the National Guard have been deployed to assist in the rescue operation, Beshear said.

Rescue operations are being carried out in most parts of Mayfield. Mayfield is a small town in southwestern Kentucky. 10 thousand people live in this city. This is where the states of Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas meet.

President Biden called the catastrophe one of the largest tornadoes in U.S. history

Video footage and photos posted on social media show brick buildings in the town of Mayfield mingling with the ground. Cars parked next to the house were crushed under the rubble. A traditional Graves County church has collapsed. Part of another church nearby was also destroyed.

Joe Biden has announced that the federal government will do everything possible to help all the areas affected by this powerful tornado.
