At least 19 people have been killed and three others injured in a head-on collision between a cargo truck and a car in Mexico.

Local authorities have confirmed that the accident took place on a highway connecting Mexico City and the central city of Puebla.

Several vehicles caught fire after a collision between several vehicles with a cargo truck.

The truck collided with six vehicles as it crossed a toll booth, federal highway authorities said in a statement. 19 people were killed and three others were injured. Among the dead was a truck driver.

The injured have been admitted to a local hospital, a statement said.

Federal highway authorities are trying to normalize the situation. Work is underway to remove the vehicles involved in the accident from the road. In the meantime, the traffic on that highway has been stopped.
