Construction of India's first underwater tunnel under the Hooghly River in Kolkata is underway to establish a metro link between Howrah and Kolkata. It will be launched by 2023.

The 520 m section of the 16.6 km long tunnel east-west will be at the bottom of the river. The tunnel corridor is being constructed 33 meters below the river bed. It will connect Kolkata with Howrah.

The metro line is being constructed by Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRCL).

Site Supervisor Mithun Ghosh said that there would be a walkway in the tunnel to evacuate passengers in case of emergency.

He said, "In case of any technical problem in the underwater tunnel area, important passagework has been done keeping in view the need to evacuate the passengers by the special route. It will be possible to provide full service ".
