The number of unregistered pharmacies in the country is 12,592, said Health Minister Zahid Maleque.

According to an estimate till August this year, the Minister presented this information in the Parliament session today.

He also said that work is underway to identify and give licenses to unregister drug stores.

The information was given by the Health Minister in response to a written question from MP Nurunnabi Chowdhury (Bhola-3) in the Jatiya Sangsad session chaired by Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury.

He further said that field-level officials of eight divisional departments and 55 districts under the Department of Drug Administration regularly visit pharmacies in different parts of the country.

If an unregistered store is found, they are asked to show a reasoned notice. The owners of these shops are given the opportunity to collect licenses under certain conditions, he said.

The minister further said that legal action has been taken against unregistered pharmacy owners. They were sentenced to various terms, including fines, in a mobile court.

If necessary, a case is filed in the magistrate court, he added.
