The U.S. military says it has carried out a drone strike in eastern Afghanistan, killing a member of a group linked to the Islamic State jihadist group.

The operation targeted a "planner" of the ISK group based in Nangarhar province.

IS says it carried out a suicide bombing at Kabul airport on Thursday, killing 170 people. Among them were 13 American soldiers.

The United States has said that preliminary information indicates that the man targeted in the drone strike in Nangahar has died.

The United States has said no civilians were killed in the attack.

Public rescue operations have been underway at Kabul airport since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan earlier this month.

The deadline set by the United States for the end of the rescue operation in Afghanistan is coming to an end next Tuesday.

It is estimated that more than 10,000 people have been rescued in the past two weeks.

In the meantime, IS attacked the airport on Thursday.

President Joe Biden warned Friday that those behind the attack would be identified.

ISK or the Islamic State in Khorasan Province is basically a branch of the Islamic State group.

It is the most feared and violent of all jihadist militant groups in Afghanistan.

The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a crowd of men, women and children outside Kabul airport.

Several Afghans trying to flee the country were killed. The dead included U.S. military officials as well as the children of two British nationals and a British national.

President Biden warned the attackers on Friday. "We will not forgive. We will not forget. We will find you and pay the ultimate price for it."

As many as 5,000 US troops are still stationed at Kabul airport, leaving Afghans desperate to leave the country.

This is the first US drone strike in Afghanistan since Thursday's bombing.

"There have been unmanned airstrikes in Afghanistan's Nangarhar province. The initial idea is that we were able to kill the target. We also know that no civilians were killed," said Capt. Bill Urban of Central Command.
