Zillur Rahman's anniversary of death today

Today is the ninth death anniversary of former president and general secretary of the Awami League Zillur Rahman. He died at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on March 20, 2013, when he was the 19th President of Bangladesh.

Zillur Rahman was born on 9 March 1929 in Bhairabpur village of Bhairab Upazila of Kishoreganj district. His political career started through the great language movement.

He was the GS of Fazlul Haque Hall of Dhaka University at that time. Bangabandhu's co-worker Zillur Rahman was one of the organizers of the war of liberation. He was the elected Member of Parliament six times from the Bhairab-Kuliyarchar constituency of Kishoreganj.

Zillur Rahman was sworn in as the President of the country on 12 February 2009. Earlier, when the Awami League party government was formed in 1996, he served as the Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, and as the Deputy Leader of Parliament.

He was the general secretary of Awami League three times. His wife Begum Ivy Rahman, a former president of the Awami League, died on August 24, 2004, after being injured in a grenade attack at a party rally on August 21, 2004.
